T O P I C R E V I E WPhilipBesides the expensive scale models, were there any resin kit (Airfix, Heller, Tamiya) scale models of the Hubble Space Telescope made? Skillcraft made one in the 1990s...Any plans for such a model with the upcoming 20th anniversary of HST?ilbassoThere's a great site with instructions on how to make your own HST models from PVC and also with paper model kits.garymilgromThe fact they say "these are not real telescopes, you won't be able to peer at the sky with them" is a sign of the times. Hands up everyone who thought the models you built as a kid would actually fly in space!alanh_7Can anyone tell me if there is a commercial scale model kit of the Hubble space telescope? I tried most of the mainstream manufacturers and found nothing.Any help is appreciated.Editor's note: Threads merged.Rick MulheirnThere was/is a "snapfit" kit made by Skilcraft; I picked one up while in the US 7 years ago. It is not a a super detailed model but makes for a reasonable desktop display.mercsimThe laser cut one is very nice. Its on multi-color shiny stock and its very detailed. It's easy to assemble and is well worth the price and effort. I forget who made it but spacetoys.com has it. Mine has been hanging over my desk for over 10 years and always gets comments when someone new stops by.SpaceAholicAny cS members happen to know who built this unusual Hubble Telescope model?Jay ChladekWell, since the original question was never fully answered and since there have been some recent offerings, I'll try to answer the original question as best as I can.To my knowledge, there were two HST model kits produced. The first was from Skilcraft (aka Lindberg) in the 1990s. They did it as a stand alone kit and also in a special NOVA science kit pack with Lindberg's 1/200 shuttle orbiter and some other stuff (i.e. globe halves to make planets of the solar system, etc). The scale is about 1/72, although it apparently has some proportion issues. Personally though, I think it looks pretty good at a glance as it has some nice detail on it.In 2011, Hasegawa issued their 1/200 shuttle kit with an HST in the same scale (which could be displayed with the shuttle or by itself). I don't know if these were limited edition or standard production run, but they can be found for less than the Skilcraft kits on the secondary market. The Hubble itself in the kit looks pretty good and is decent sized, even though it is 1/200.Other than those two, I don't know of any other styrene HSTs currently available. But, I "think" there might possibly be one in the works from one of the other Japanese companies (I don't recall where I heard that though). Dragon also has an HST pre-paint with one of their diecast shuttles (1/400 scale I believe), although it is pretty tiny. The Skilcraft kits were going for crazy prices on eBay, but that was a little before the Hasegawa kits hit. The Nova Science set can be found for less if your lucky since not as many people know it has the exact same Skilcraft Hubble kit in it (they are identical even though the Nova box shows an early mockup of the kit on it). In my case, I remember a week where a Skilcraft Hubble sold for about $80 on eBay, yet I was able to snag the Nova science kit for under $20. So the good deals are out there if you search for them.apolloprojeckt quote:Originally posted by SpaceAholic:Any cS members happen to know who built this unusual Hubble Telescope model? That on the table looks a scale 1/48 to me. I have built this model also two times, it's an easy model to build up by yourself, two tubes are the main parts. The Skilcraft Hubble kit is a nice kit to do more with it. The simplified version of that Hubble model paper model even flew into space on STS-125. Though as you can see, it didn't quite survive the ride up. Personally I was very excited when I saw that, as paper modeling is one of my favorite hobbies.SpaceAholicThe model I show on the table looks to be 1:48ish but not of the same design as the one you have Pascal. Bring up the higher resolution images (by clicking on each picture) and it will be more apparent the model is different.SpaceAholicI've attempted to capture the detailed etching which depicts the location of individual bays and sub-assemblies (very challenging with the reflective exterior)..PhilipDoes anyone have info on the half-open HST Optical Tube Assembly scale model made by Perkin Elmer?apolloprojecktYes, see by me here (and below), I did renovate one, very heavy. PhilipLooks like you have painted the original inside of the OTA. It's a rare scale model about half a dozen made!
Any plans for such a model with the upcoming 20th anniversary of HST?
Any help is appreciated.
